Solidarity Drive Underpass, Chicago, Illinois
Chastain provided Phase III construction engineering services for the construction of the Solidarity Drive/Lake Front Trail Underpass. This architecturally significant project was located in the city’s museum campus directly abutting the John G. Shedd Aquarium. The completed underpass, consisting of twin, precast three-sided arch bridges, provides uninterrupted access for the Lakefront Trail users; improving safety and access while helping ease congestion in the area. The project also included reconstruction of the Museum Campus Circle Drive, the relocation and restoration of the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Monument, a new "gateway" sign for the Adler Planetarium, extensive underground utility relocation, and the reconfiguration and reconstruction of a portion of the Burnham Harbor parking lot. This project was partially funded by the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ). The project was completed in 2009 and the total construction cost was $14.2 million. This project received the 2010 ACEC-IL Merit Award. |
