I-355 Veteran Memorial Tollway Improvements, DuPage County, Illinois Chastain provided Phase III construction engineering services for this $29 million, seven-and-a-half-mile road and bridge rehabilitation project. The average daily traffic on this section of the tollway is 121,400. The project included patching the existing PCC pavement and placement of an SMA overlay on the mainline (approx. 67,000 tons of SMA binder and surface mix), an HMA overlay on the shoulders (approx. 50,000 tons of HMA binder and surface mix), as well as joint replacement or deck repairs on 10 bridges. Also included was the replacement of the concrete gutter along the outside shoulder to accommodate the overlay, the vertical extension of the median barrier wall, replacement of all guardrails, signage, and pavement markings. The construction staging on this project involved 5 maintenance of traffic stages on the mainline and additional "sub-stages" at the ramps. Adding to the complexity of the project, an adjacent tollway project to the south and an adjacent IDOT project to the north were constructed concurrently. As the three projects were contiguous and no common stage change milestones existed, constant communication and coordination between the projects was essential to assure traffic continuity between the work zones. Scope of work included on-site inspection, review layout of contract including design changes, prepare records, maintain documentation, submit pay estimates, and change orders. The project was completed in 2011. In the final evaluation from ISTHA they rated Chastain as "Exceeding Expectations" in 25 of the 36 categories and the remaining 11 categories we were rated as "Meeting Expectations". The Tollway also noted, "The CM staff did an excellent job coordinating the multiple stage changes on this project in a high-volume traffic area." and "The CM staff was very well trained and professional in their responsibilities." This project received the ACEC-Illinois 2012 Engineering Excellence Special Achievement Award. |
